It is not named North Adams Regional Airport. It is the Harriman-West Airport.

This is also one of the many facilities tha belonged to Sprague Electric. The company pulled up stakes years ago and most of these buildings sat in decay until the Mayor (Joh Barrett) secured funding from state and federal sources to renovate the facility into the contemporary art space that is there today. In its prime Sprague was one of the largest employers in the immediate area. When they left (combined later with the massive pullout of General Electric in Pittsfield) the city was hurt badly. Personally, despite the amount of income it brings to limited numbers of people, the Mass Moca did not adequately replace the blue collar jobs lost when Sprague pulled out. The area is still somewhat depressed. Don't get me wrong, Mass Moca is a good thing as it at least brought tourist dollars to the area. I just don't think that enough people are benefitting in the same economic way as they would have if Sprague had not left. Oh well.

I didn't bother to follow the link, but I do know that during its construction it was one of the first commercial uses of nitro glycerin to blast through the rock inside the tunnel. Lots of rumors of ghosts from those killed during its construction. It's a really interesting story to read about and a fascinating use of technology of the period. It is alledged that during prohibition, some of the locals had stills and other illegal alcohol manufactuing operations up and around the tunnel area. Not sure why they would have chosen that location, but it's a good story. Once upon a time there used to be two sets of tracks going through the tunnel. Up onthe Mohawk trail there is a place called "Central Shaft" that has a ventilation shaft that takes smoke out from the senter of the tunnels lenght. I would imagine that during the days of coal fire locomotives it would have been pretty nasty going through that tunnel if happened to be in a passenger train.

What's really sad is that years ago the donuts were made there on site. No donut truck to wait around for. On the other hand thebest donuts in North Adams were NEVER Dunkin' Donuts.....it was Nevilles. MMMMMMmmmmm
